According to wowprogress, Silvermoon is indeed the most active server for Alliance EU. Ravencrest is second. Realms still matter for guilds, the economy, and mythic raiding. Even if you don't care about mythic raiding, it's best to choose a realm that's very populous for your chosen faction unless you're joining a friend who's on a different sort of realm.
